Series Information
The 2016 Survey of Industrial Production (ASIP) for Zanzibar has been conducted since the establishment of the Zanzibar Statistical Office. The last annual industrial survey was conducted in 2010.
Abstract
The summary in this section is only for the analysis of all establishments covered in 2016 Annual Survey of Industrial Production (2016 ASIP).

A total of 893 establishments were interviewed of which 195 had 10 or more persons engaged and 698 had less than 10 persons engaged. The highest concentration of these establishments was in Mjini Magharibi with 362 establishments equivalent to 40.5 percentfollowed by Kusini Pemba with 227 (25.4 percent), Kaskazini Unguja with 119 (13.2 percent), Kaskazini Pemba with 114 (12.8 percent) while Kusini Unguja had 72 (8.1 percent).

A total of 883 establishments (98.9 percent) with 7,090 workers (96.8 percent) were wholly owned by nationals, while 6 establishments (0.7 percent) with 170 workers (2.3 percent) were wholly foreign owned and four (4) establishments (0.4 percent) with 64 workers (0.9 percent)were under joint venture ownership.

Out of 893 establishments, 195 (22 percent) 10 or more persons engaged. Majority of the establishments 861 (96 percent) were in manufacturing Sector while 32 (4 percent) were in mining and quarrying Sector.

Total number of persons engaged was 7,324 of whom 6,851 (94 percent) were in manufacturing and 473 (6 percent) were in mining and quarrying Sector. Mjini Magharibi region engaged the largest number of workers (2,905 persons) equivalent to 40 percent.

Total number of persons employed was 5,114 of whom 4,056 (79.3 percent) were male and 1,058 (20.7 percent) were female. Manufacturing sector employed 4,754 (93 percent) while mining sector employed 360 (7 percent) workers.

The amount paid by industrial establishments as compensation of employees was TZS 20,038 million while the total gross output or total value of goods and services produced was TZS 133,025 million and total cost of production (Intermediate Consumption) was TZS 71,653 million.

The total value added was TZS 61,372 million of which manufacturing had the largest contribution of TZS 60,459 million (98.5 percent).

Average capacity utilization rate was 60 percent. The value added as a percentage of gross output was 46 percent.

The response rate was 97 percent whereby 893 questionnaires were returned out of 924 questionnaires distributed.

Notes
The Survey covered all industrial establishments with five or more workers operated in 2016 and a sample of 10 percent of size 1-4 establishments. The survey covered about 893 establishments. The scope of the Annual Survey of Industrial Production 2016 includes General information, Employment, Labour costs, Inputs/Purchases, Output, Inventory of working capital, Expenditure on fixed assets and depreciation, and Depreciation.

Response Rate
The response rate was calculated based on all questionnaires completed and returned, but excluded the establishments that could not be located or closed. A total of 924 questionnaires which were distributed a total of 893 questionnaires (97 percent) were collected.

Supervision
Data collection exercise was undertaken by a well trained team of 18 enumerators and three (3) supervisors.
Field work started in September 2017 for Unguja and November 2017 for Pemba. It was completed by the end of February 2018. The field staffs were recruited from OCGS and the line ministries. They visited the establishments and worked closely with the respondents and assisted them filling in the questionnaires. Respondents were asked to provide the data from their accounting records in 2016.

Questionnaires

Questionnaires
The questionnaire was designed according to the International Recommendations for Industrial Statistics of the United Nations and took into consideration the requirements of the stakeholders. The information collected satisfies the needs of National Account and are considered to be useful to the government, researchers and the business community.

Data Processing

Data Editing
Enumerators and some respondents returned completed questionnaire to OCGS, Zanzibar. Questionnaires were then edited and post coded accordingly.
Other Processing
The CSPro.16 Software was used for data entry system, after which the data were transferred to Microsoft Excel for cleaning and SPSS for generating tables. The cleaned dataset was then used to generate the preliminary tables as per tabulation plan.
