Series Information
The 2012 Census of Industrial Production (CIP) for Zanzibar, Tanzania is the fifth to be conducted since the establishment of the Zanzibar Statistical Office. Previous industrial censuses were conducted in years 1978, 1989, 2001 and 2008.
Abstract
Zanzibar consists of two main islands, Unguja and Pemba, and about 50 other small islets. Unguja and Pemba are 50 km apart and separated by the Pemba channel.

Geography and Demography
Location: 40kms off Mainland coast of East Africa, latitude 40 and 60 South longitude 39.5 and 400 east.

Surface area: Zanzibar 2,654km2, Unguja 1,666km2, Pemba 988km2.

Population: 2012 census 1,303,569. Population growth rate is 2.8 percent.

The contribution of industrial sector share to total GDP in 2011 was 12.0 percent compared to 12.6 in the previous year, 2010. The world economic history shows that the share of the manufacturing sector increases as economies grow. It is perhaps for this reason that the size of the manufacturing sector is often thought to be one of the indicators of the level of economic development of a country. With economic progress however, the share of the manufacturing sector is expected to increase beyond its current level.

In order to promote growth in the industrial sector, it is essential that more information becomes available with respect to the present status of industry, its structure, its real contribution to GDP, etc.

The industrial sector in Zanzibar is relatively small and according to national accounts estimates in 2012 represented around 12.0 percent of GDP, whereby 1.0 percent mining, 3.9% manufacturing, 1.5% electricity and 5.6% construction. Most of the manufacturing establishments are still small and few large size establishments operate mainly in the production of soft drink and food processing.

In 2012, the number of large industrial establishments operating in Zanzibar was 235. The highest concentration of these establishments was in Mjini Magharibi 111 followed by Kusini Pemba 53, Kaskazini Unguja 25, Kaskazini Pemba 25 and Kusini Unguja 21. 223 establishments which are about 95 percent were wholly owned by nationals, while 10 establishments about 4.3 percent were reported to be wholly foreign owned, and the remaining 2 establishments about 0.7 percent were under joint venture ownership.

For the total industry sector (large) stood at 62 percent during 2012.Out of the total 235 industrial establishments in 2012 the majority (216 or 92 percent) were in Manufacturing Sector while 19 (8%) were in the Mining Sector.

The total number of persons engaged (large industries) was 4,280 of which 3,943 (92 percent) were in Manufacturing 337 (8%) were in Mining Sector. Mjini/Magharibi region employed the largest number of workers (2,211 persons 51.7 percent).

Total number of persons employed was 2,611 workers of which 2,162 were male and 2,426 or 93 percent were in the Manufacturing Sector, while 185 or 7% were in Mining Sector.

The 223 national owned establishments engaged a total of 3,766 (88 percent) workers compared to 294 (7%) in foreign owned establishments. The jointly owned establishments had 220 (5.0%) persons.

A total of Tshs. 5,267 million was paid by the industrial establishment as compensation to employees.

The total gross output (larger industries) or total value of goods and services produced by the industrial establishments was 70,680 million. Sales of goods amounted to Tshs. 248,539 million which 2% or Tsh.3, 687 million were exports mainly from food products.

The total cost of production i.e intermediate consumption was Tshs. 39,099 million of which 14,836 million or 38.0 percent represented the cost of raw materials imported.

The total value added was Tshs. 31,581 million. The composition of value added by industry shows that, Manufacturing had the largest contribution of Tshs. 30,238 or 96 percent of the total value added.

Average capacity utilization rate

Total number of establishments in all industries operating in Zanzibar 2012 (LARGE AND SMALL) was 2201. The number of person engaged was 10,427.

The total gross output (LARGE AND SMALL) or total value of goods and services produced by industrial establishments was Tshs. 145,416 million.

The total Intermediate Consumption or cost of production was Tshs. 73,456 million.

The total Value Added was Tshs. 71,960 million.

The compensation of Employees was Tshs. 10,176 million.

The census has provided a wealth of information on the different types of industrial activities in Zanzibar.

Notes
The census covered all industrial establishments with one or more workers operated in calendar year 2012. The census covered about 2201 establishments.

The scope of the Census of Industrial Prouction 2012 includes General information,Employment,Labour costs,Inputs / Purchases,Output, Inventory of working capital, and Expenditure on fixed assets and depreciation.

Sampling

Response Rate
A total of 235 questionnaires of large establishments returns were received being 100 percent of all questionnaires distributed. The response rate was calculated based on all questionnaires completed and returned. But excluded those entire establishments that could not be located or closed (14 establishments were found to be closed).

Supervision
Data collection was undertaken by a well trained team of 35 enumerators under the supervision of 6 supervisors.
Field work started in March 2013 and was completed by the end of April 2013. The field staffs were recruited from their respective areas. They visited the establishment and worked closely with the responsible officer and assisted in filling in the questionnaire. Respondents were asked to provide the data from their accounting records for the calendar year 2012.

Questionnaires

Questionnaires
The questionnaire was designed according to the International Recommendations for Industrial Statistics of the United Nations and took into consideration the requirements of the stakeholders. The information collected satisfies the needs of National Account and are considered to be useful to the government, researchers and the business community.

Data Processing

Data Editing
Enumerators/Respondents returned completed questionnaire to OCGS, Zanzibar. They were edited and post coded accordingly.
Other Processing
The CSPro software was used for data entry systems, after which the data were transferred to Microsoft Access for (data cleaning) generation of tables. The cleaned dataset was then used to generate the preliminary tables as per tabulation plan.
